| There
are at least four published basic playing
strategies which when followed will result
in a casino's edge of about 5.2 percent. These
strategies were developed by Lenny Frome (Expert
Strategy for Caribbean Stud Poker), Olaf Vaneura
(S7nart Casino Gambling), Stanley Ko (Mastering
the Game of Caribbean Stud Poker), and Peter
Griffin and John M. Gwynn, Jr. (in their paper,
"An Analysis of Caribbean Stud Poker").
Although the recommended strategies by these
authors differ slightly in complexity, here
is a simple basic playing strategy to get
you started:
Make the call bet if:
You have at least a pair or higher.
You have at least an Ace, King, and one of
your other cards is the same as the dealer's
up card.
If you have neither of the above, your best
bet is to fold.
It is possible to mathematically calculate
when the progressive jackpot is worth our
while-when we as players have positive rather
than negative expectation. In games which
require a $1 ante bet, the progressive jackpot
needs to be about $280,000 in order for players
to have a positive expectation. Given a choice
it is obviously to your advantage to play
this game at a casino where the jackpot exceeds
$280,000. The bottom line is to shop around,
call a few casinos ahead of time, and play
Caribbean Stud poker at the casino that has
the highest jackpot.
One final note: Even though the probability
is very, very slim that two players at the
same table would be dealt royal flushes during
the same deal, if it occurred and they both
had made the jackpot bet, then casinos have
been known to either split the jackpot between
the two players, or award the jackpot to the
player farthest to the dealer's left while
the other player will be awarded the reseeded
jackpot (which most likely will be considerably
lower in value) |
